In search of Autumn at Low Wood, Backbarrow.

It's that time of year when the leaves are turning a hundred different shades of red and gold. Well that's the theory anyway. In reality the extended spell of mild weather appears to have convinced the trees that Summer is not quite over yet! Some have started to put on their Autumn coats, but there is still a great deal of green to be seen.

This lady enjoys an uninterrupted view across the Leven Valley from Brow Edge, Backbarrow.
Riders from a nearby stables make the most of the quiet lanes and bridleways.

Hmmm.... maybe the lanes are not always so quiet!

Hints of Autumn in Low Wood
In the early 1800s, the area now known as South Lakeland was home to several gunpowder mills. The remains of the Low Wood mill can still be seen.
An old steam boiler rusts away in the shadows.

Leaving Low Wood and rejoining Brow Edge Road, the hedgerows were alive with bees and hoverflies making the most of the wild ivy nectar.. Every garden should have some of this growing in it!
Incoming!!!

Fallen trees, mossy rocks and decaying logs - a very important habitat for wildlife.
Just as we rounded a bend in the road, we came across this beautiful Autumn display. A little further on we found the ideal place to sit and eat our picnic. It's a shame we didn't bring one but we'll remember for the next time!
On the opposite side of the busy A590 the River Leven thunders its way from Windermere, past the aptly named Whitewater Hotel and onwards to the Leven Estuary at Morecambe Bay.

Hopefully the high winds forecast for this week won't blow all the leaves off the trees before they have a chance to turn gold!
Thanks for visiting my blog. I hope you've enjoyed the photos!
